JD Vance can't win. He shrinks the tent. If GOP is smart, Rubio is a winner...widens tent immensely. I know plenty of moderate centrists who will vote for him. I know lots of republicans who won't vote for Vance. He's tied to Tucker and that's toxic beyond words

Good points, Nic. I fear that there will be a big crowd of Republicans seeking the nomination. The Vance supporters will stick with him all the way, while the other candidates like Rubio will scramble for tidbits of media time and cannibalize each other. As this happens, the moderates will split the vote, knock each other off one by one and Vance will get the nomination.

The Msgr always has great perspective. Looking forward to the program.

Interesting perspective but compare his apparent attitude about issues with Pope Leo XIV and Pope Francis. Note Chicago native Pope was first Leo after Leo XIII who was responsible for Rerum Novarum-certainly not the ideology of Vance and Catholic members of the Supreme Court. Of course, Monsignor's apparent politics are compatible with Massapequa.

Catholics have anyways been in politics, and in the spot light. not surprised by the interchange with the Pope previously, and interesting about Vance book cover...I Def want a president who fights for all citizens, glad he made the call. And it is good to hear that Ukraine has put Putin on the ropes. And so interested to hear what Trump has to say at NATO summit, and what you have to say about it!

Much of the legal, institutional, and intellectual machinery behind the contemporary right is Catholic-led...In some ways, conservative Catholic networks in Washington function like the Communist Party in China.....The NYT is blatantly insulting when they try to compare conservative Catholics to communism....it is an oxymoron from the morons at the NYT.

Of interest since 2010 there have been very few Protestants on the Supreme Court. From 2010-2017 no Protestants. From 2017 to the present Justice Gorsuch although raised Catholic has attended Episcopal Churches for a long time joined in 2022 by Jackson. While Catholics 2009-2016 had 6 on the Court,2016-2020 5 Catholics, 2020-present 6 Catholics-not counting Gorsuch as Catholic.

That is interesting but it certainly doesn't make us communists...

I didn't mean to imply that Catholics are Communists. I spent 4 years at night decades ago receiving a post BA degree from a Catholic Institution. As a reader of alumni magazine I certainly know that.

Re Dems tolerating Platner because wanted seat. GOP did not expel George Santos for months despite his obvious frauds because at time GOP had a very small majority in the House and every vote counted to keep GOP agenda and control. Both parties play the immoral game.

The North and Midwest have been steadily losing share of population for decades certainly before Leland was born-obvious compare every decade from 1950 to the present New York State electoral college votes have gone down by over a third. Actually rate of decrease has slowed down.

Loss of corporate headquarters from cities like NYC, Cleveland, Pittsburgh started and greatly completed decades ago. Air conditioning becoming standard made the South livable.

If one believes where income of big corporations they are heavily from tax havens. Similarly in international revenue has left US to go to tax haven. Some states don't believe in safety but in low taxes-Florida classic example.

You're missing it in Michigan. McMorrow suspended her Senate campaign to consolidate D primary support to Stevens and away from el-Sayed, who has about 40% of primary voters. (McMorrow's campaign debts also likely get paid, but that's always the way.) If Michigan D regulars unite around more centrist Stevens, she gets 60% and el-Sayed is out. Not a slam dunk, but the Michigan D party has a month to crank up a GOTV machine to make it happen.

Lucky, I am delighted that Frank Luntz is on your show. His book, Words That Work, is a classic. I highly recommend it. He has a simple premise: he who controls the lexicon controls the argument. We let the socialists control the argument when we let them hide behind the fig leaf of "democratic socialists". I am sure you remember the anarchist crowd of Occupy Wall Street. How absurd it would be if we let them label themselves as " "democratic anarchists ".

The socialist candidate in Michigan, is really slick with the tongue. He could sell ice to an Eskimo. He wouldn't dare go on your show. You would eviscerate him.

A big example of controlling language is Frank Luntz who advised those attacking the estate tax or inheritance tax to refer to them as death taxes. He has been very successful with that rebranding that Estate tax whose primary purpose was to prevent same wealth staying in one family forever has led to in practice almost abolishing it-which of course coupled with great decrease in highest marginal tax rates has decreased government revenue and increased the debt. Which is a higher more moral value for a trillionaire to pay minimal taxes or for poor to have food, and medical care to be able to survive.
